What
is IOT
Ø The Internet of Things (IoT)
refers to a system of interrelated, internet-connected objects that are able to
collect and transfer data over a wireless network without human intervention.
Ø IoT makes the devices smarter by giving them
the ability to send data over the internet, allowing the device to communicate
with people and other IoT-enabled things.
Ø EX. The connected smart home is a good example
of IoT in action. Internet-enabled doorbells, smoke detectors and security
alarms create a connected hub where data is shared between physical devices and
users can remotely control the things in that hub i.e., adjusting
temperature settings, unlocking doors, etc via a mobile app or
website.
How IoT entered the Farming sector?
The Internet of Things has made smart farming possible. With
the introduction of industrial IoT in farming, modern-day sensors are
now available for use. These sensors are connected to the cloud via a cellular/satellite
network. This system helps us to obtain live and real-time data and make
effective decisions.
The application of IoT has helped the farmers in a lot of
activities such as monitoring the water
levels in tanks. This all is done in real-time which increases
the efficiency of the whole process of irrigation. One more thing that has been
made possible with the advancement of IoT technology is the tracking of seed-growth.
Farmers can now track the consumption of resources and the time taken by a seed
to fully grow into a plant.
When we talk about IoT-based smart
farming, we are looking at a system built to monitor the crop field with the
help of sensors. The combination of data coming from diverse sensors
allows farmers to build crop models and predict how crops will grow in the
given conditions, integrate precision farming practices, create harvesting
strategies, etc. Sensors used in farming are Gyroscope and image sensors,
Moisture and temperature sensor
The IoT-based smart farming not only helps in modernizing the
conventional farming methods but also targets other agriculture methods like
organic farming and enhances highly transparent farming.
Applications of IOT in farming
Ø Climate Monitoring: With the IoT, you can monitor real-time weather conditions. You can install sensors inside and outside of your fields. Then, these sensors collect data from the environment about the area’s rainfall, humidity and temperatures. If anything unusual appears in the data, the system sends you an automatic alert so that you can respond to the changes.
Ø Data Analytics: With an IoT platform, you can get cloud-based data storage to hold all of the data your system generates. By collecting data on a large scale, you can use to it create meaningful analyses of livestock, crop or weather conditions. Then, this data lets you improve the quality of your products and the fertility of your land.
Ø Smart Greenhouses: The IoT can be added to greenhouses to create weather stations and enable automated adjustments. When climate conditions change, the IoT can automatically adjust without human intervention. Plus, sensors can help you monitor things like water consumption and light levels.
Ø Agricultural Drones: With the IoT, you can use aerial and ground drones to monitor things like planting, crop spraying, crop health and crop monitoring. After they are installed, sensors can monitor how healthy your crops are after they have started growing. Smart drones can reduce the number of chemicals that make it into the groundwater, so you can reduce your impact on the environment. In the future, the farming industry will be able to adopt even more IoT devices and techniques. Satellites and better cellular networks will make it possible to use the IoT in more operations than ever before. The impact of the IoT in farming is significant for an industry that operates on low margins.

form of imaging mainly involves using the sensor cameras that are placed in
various corners of the farm to generate images that go through digital
image processing.

processing combined with machine learning makes use of images from the database
to compare with images of crops for concluding the size, shape, color, and
growth, as a result, adjusting the quality.
